Devil Summoner: Soul Hackers was a Sega Saturn RPG that never saw a release in the West, even though it saw ports to subsequent consoles in Japan, such as Sony's PSX. It's a loosely related sequel to another Sega Saturn video game that also never saw release in the West. Finally, however, Atlus was able to bring Soul Hackers to the West to join other titles in the Nintendo 3DS' increasingly incredible library of games. This game is awesome in a number of ways. The mix of occult elements with noirish cyberpunk futurism makes for a very unique backdrop for the interesting story, which involves a group of young hackers unwittingly getting involved in a vast, demonic conspiracy. The gameplay is very old-school, with first-person navigation in dungeons, turn-based battles, and of course the things that make a SMT games unique: demon negotiation, summoning, and fusion. It is entertaining to engage in the frequently oddball conversations with different types of demons, who sport a variety of personality types. Props to Atlus U.S.A. for their awesome English translation of the script.Graphically, the game is dated (this IS a port of a Sega Saturn game released in 1997), but enough fresh paint has been applied to this title to make it look decent enough. The audio is a real treat, with some stunning music and quite impressive English voice-acting for most of the game's dialogue. I would recommend wearing earbuds or headphones while playing this, though, especially if you're playing thi.
