Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon: Shadow Wars - 3DS Game (Retro Fam)

I get the 3DS when it was first released and none of the launch games really appealed to me at first. After checking out videos and hearing positive comments about this game, I decided to give it a try. And I have to agree that it's a sleeper hit and I would recommend it to those who are fans of the genre and even those willing to try one out. Just don't go in expecting a typical Ghost Recon name (I had never even played one before this).There's three modes, campaign, multi-player, and skirmish. Campaign is fairly long and you can play on three different difficulty settings. One can always change the difficulty in the middle of the campaign if overwhelmed, although I didn't find the game very difficult until the end-game stages, and only then it might take 2 or 3 tries if you didn't take advantage of the option to save in middle of battle.Multi-player is lacking in the fact that this game has no online, so it can only be played by passing the 3DS between two people or playing by yourself, but that's not very fun...There's 10 different missions I believe based off maps from the campaign and there is some variety in the objectives so the mode itself doesn't get stale too quickly.Skirmish missions are challenge missions in which you complete objectives with pre-made units and require much more strategy than most campaign missions. I enjoyed this because of the spike in difficulty and there is some replay value in trying new or better strategies.Overall, the game is pretty long.

Before I decided to purchase a 3DS, I was browsing for what games to pick up for the system. Admittedly, Ghost Recon Shadow Wars was definitely off of my radar at the time. When I first saw the trailer for it the graphics and slow paced gameplay made it look like a boring and unpolished/rushed game, which made sense at first because it was a launch title for the system. Soon enough, I hear news about a Ubisoft sale for the 3DS and Shadow Wars was one of them. Seeing it priced at $7.50 and reading positive reviews on it, I decided to purchase it. And HOLY am I glad I did! I can safely say this was an absolute steal for $7.50. Now that i've experienced how fantastic and fun the game is, I now believe its actually justifiable of its initial $40 price tag. Let me explain the pros and cons of what you're getting.Pros:-Very long campaign (35 main missions that offer plenty of variety ie. eliminate enemies, capture flags, disarm bombs, etc.)-20 unlockable skirmish missions (Puts you into certain scenarios)-Multiplayer (The fact that they added this mode in is still better than no multiplayer, i'll explain further below)-Graphics (The levels are varied and detailed consisting of valleys, rivers, small towns, factories, underground facilities, etc.)-Gameplay (Easy to pick up and play, but also very deep and strategic as well, fun if you like SRPG)-Different difficulty modes to choose from-3D (Not a game changer in any way but it does add some nice depth and aren't an eyesore like some.

I purchased this game on a whim. I saw it sitting on a shelf and thought it would be just another generic shooter with Tom Clancy's name on it that would probably end up collecting dust if I bought it. I couldn't be more wrong! This game is the epitome of addicting fun. It's a tactical strategy game, in the same vein as Final Fantasy Tactics and Advance Wars, with a military theme. You are given a squad of troops, each with different specialties, and you must complete the missions using their strengths to your advantage. The game's plot revolves around a conflict involving the Russians and Ukranians, but really the story isn't the reason you play this game. You can just skip the cutscenes altogether and not miss a beat. The missions, however, are extremely well-done. The game throws a lot of variety your way, and you'll easily find yourself losing hours of your life to this game. The game is also really long, with 35 missions to tackle in the main campaign as well as a meaty selection of skirmish missions. On top of that, there are also multiplayer missions, though sadly the game doesn't support online play. The main missions themselves are pretty long as well, with several taking 30 minutes to an hour to complete...sometimes more on higher difficulties.The 3D effect is pretty neat, though it adds absolutely nothing to the gameplay. It is purely for aesthetic purposes. I personally like to have the 3D turned all the way up, as I love the slick way it makes the g.

If you love the likes of fire emblem, advanced wars, or final Fantasy tatics, you will most likely love this game. I enjoyed it, although the characters and story ate shallow the gameplay is fun.

I wasn't sure it was worth reviewing a 3DS game that has already been around for a year or two. Also, the game is only selling for about $13 now, so it's not a major investment even if you know nothing about it.I just finished the single player campaign, and I loved it. Over the course of 2 months I logged more than 30 hours in the game. I never thought I would spend this much time on a portable game. Interestingly, the game only reports that I am 53% of the way through the game! Perhaps the campaign represents 50% of the game, and skirmish missions the other half.Ghost Recon is currently the only game (I believe) that really fills the strategy void in the 3DS lineup. If you like any of the Advance Wars games, Ghost Recon is a game for you. The game play is quite similar... turn based unit movement. The only real difference is the idea that you can outfit your squad members (units) differently before each mission depending upon what challenges you expect them to face.The bottom line is that Ghost Recon is a solid game for strategy fans. Really. If you like turn-based strategy, this game should be in your library.p.s. What didn't I give the game 5 stars? Mainly due to a few factors:1) The game play is repetitive. Mission variety would have been appreciated, though the skirmish missions are delivering on this to a degree.2) I wish I had more customization.
