Turbografx-16 – Features

The first 16-bit console to hit the market, the TurboGrafx-16, was certainly an impressive system, capable of displaying almost arcade-level graphics, smooth gameplay and high-quality sound.

Powerful Configuration

With an 8-bit CPU, 16-bit video colour encoder and 16-bit display controller, the TurboGrafx-16’s hardware is certainly impressive, allowing the system to simultaneously display 482 colours on-screen out of a pallet of 512 available.

Innovative Controller

Officially called the TurboPad, the TurboGrafx-16 has the classical D-pad and action buttons and features two Turbo switches with three different settings! This allows the button to be held down to register as several pushes, making your life much easier in the system’s action-packed shooters.

Turbografx-16 – The Games

With over 600 titles available, the TurboGrafx-16’s library is one of the most qualitative ones you’ll find. The small number of third-party developers meant that companies could put more resources into their games, leading to far more robust experiences than their competition.

Keith Courage In Alpha Zones

This action-platformer will have you play as Keith Courage on a mission to save Earth from the forces of B.A.D. The game features seven levels. Each is split into two parts: the overworld and the underworld. The Overworld has you play as Keith in human form, defending against enemies using his dagger. In contrast, the underworld will have you dawn the Nova Suit, an excellent mechanical suit of armour to plow through enemies and challenge the final bosses!

Space Harrier

This fast-paced rail shooter is set in a surreal world composed of brightly coloured landscapes, where you will be using Harrier’s jet-propelled laser cannon to smash through enemies. The game features 18 levels, 15 of which have final boss fights. Throughout the game, you will battle enemies ranging from prehistoric animals and Chinese dragons to flying robots, airborne geometric objects and alien pods while avoiding projectiles and obstacles. Lastly, the game’s beautiful graphics and high-quality sound complement the gameplay, making it a must-have for any Master System owner.

Military Madness

This turn-based strategy game takes place on the moon in 2089, having you take control of the Allied-Union forces against the Axis-Xenon forces. Units cannot be produced, but the Allied-Union forces can "capture" enemy units if they are in factories or find unsecured factories and gain units from them. Units can also be repaired by returning them to factories under Allied-Union control. Lastly, the game was highly praised in its day, being called one of the most addictive strategy games ever.

Alien Crush

This fun pinball video game features a sci-fi theme, as you will be fighting against aliens through your pinball skills. Secondly, with several hidden/bonus rooms to discover and a beautifully animated board, this title will keep you returning for more.

Bonk’s Adventure

This cute platformer will have you play as Bonk. Bonk is a bald caveboy who embarks on a mission to save Princess Za from the evil King Drool. Throughout the game, you will be dodging dinosaur attacks and bonking them with your head. The game features several power-ups to make your journey easier. Lastly, this title's light-hearted but challenging feel makes it perfect for players of all ages.

Legendary Axe

This title has you play as Gogan, a barbarian whose girl was kidnapped by the cult of Jagu. You must navigate through six platforming levels with a legendary "Sting" axe. You must defeat Jagu and his minions and rescue Flare. The game features a rechargeable "strength meter" that determines how much damage is dealt from the axe to enemies. Lastly, it’s one of the best titles that the TurboGrafix offers and received several awards.

Turbografx-16 – Fun Facts

  • Most of the system’s games came on special HuCard ROM cartridges, a thin, credit-card-like system.
  • The TurboGrafx-16 was the first video game console capable of playing CD-ROM games with an optional add-on.
  • While the console launched before Sega’s Genesis only sold a mere 5.8 million units. It was mainly due to the lack of third-party developers.

This has been worth the wait. If you've seen other mini consoles from Sega, Nintendo, Sony, etc., then you know what it's about. The Turbo Grafx though, it's upped the game in a big way. From the start, the menu design is really nice. Great music, and the attention to detail in the pixel art is in a whole new league. There are even animations of inserting game cartridges and CDs, after selecting a game to play.A nice touch is switching between the Turbo Grafx, Core Grafx, and PC Engine modes. Not only do you get a UI theme to match the selected console, but you also get extra regional games. The emulation is generally excellent. This comes with only a single control pad, but it does include the turbo/autofire switches.Honestly, this is worth it for Soldier Blade and Castlevania alone, but the game selection is extensive.Worth every penny.

I grew up playing TG-16 games back in 1990 and appreciated the unique library of software it offered. The games had an appealing look/feel to them that set them apart from the competition (lots of Namco ports, creative concepts, interesting hardware, etc).I've been following the news about the TG16 mini console for a few months and finally received my unit earlier this week. I will say that, aside from a few strange software choices, this is by far the best of the retro/mini remake consoles on the market. The hardware itself is well done. Plastic texture is about the same as the original. The system itself has a light and hollow feeling (again, similar to the actual TG16 from 1989). And even the power switch has that same satisfying loud click when you turn the system on. Controllers are well done, but they are a tad smaller than the original and the D-pad has a clickier/tactile feeling compared to the original's mushier feel.Software-wise, there's a good selection of games for both the TG16 and PC Engine + a few SuperGrafx and CD Rom titles thrown in. Emulation seems very well done, with no real quirks that I've discovered so far. Thank god they didn't go RPG crazy like Nintendo with the SNES Mini...you get a genuinely good variety of games. There are some odd choices (ie: Dungeon Explorer is included for both the TG and PCE libraries, some classics like Legendarry Axe are missing, and some of the Japanese games are heavy text heavy which may make progression for US gamers tough). All in all, I am quite pleased.

Some people really like the console. Some games seemed really off, not sure why it is still so popular and sells over double it's original $100 price

I was so excited when Konami announced this that I screamed for joy! The TurboGrafx (PC ENGINE) was ahead of its time back in the 80s. In 1988, The NES and Sega Master System were in their prime, but as arcade games kept improving, people were longing for a more arcade experience. NEC took charge and released the impressive TurboGrafx 16 entertainment system. Arcade quality games were released, but sadly it never took off as successfully as it should have, even with a cd drive (Turbo Duo), turbo booster (added better video quality) and portable (Turbo Express). But thankfully there is a fantastic rebirth of this gem.The quality of this console is fantastic! You have two USB connections in the front, with a nice power switch in the center. The added Turbo Booster is removable to plug in both power and HDMI. One issue I have is the booster. It is removable, but it is not easy having everything plugged in while keeping that piece on. A bit of an annoyance, but it’s nothing major. Some people hate the lack of a power brick, but seriously people! You prolly have a dozen 5v power blocks all over your home! With me, I wanted the whole package! I pre-ordered early last year with the console, power block, 4 extra controllers, and the multi tap. I finally got mine a few weeks ago in parts, but Covid messed up a lot.How are the games? You get a large amount of top rated TG16 games including some great Japanese only titles. From Bomberman and Neutopia to Castlevania and Dragon Spirit! Fantastic game collection! Even tho the Japanese games are in Japanese, most are easy to figure out if you can’t read Japanese. I love the game selection screen! You have nicely animated characters flying around the screen and the music is nice. My favorite to see is when you choose a game! The HuCard loads into the unit and it starts! If it’s a PC Engine CD game, you get to see the HuCard System load followed by a cd spinning and lastly the game loading. It’s the best loading I e seen on a mini.
