A great telling of an epic battle that took place …

A great telling of an epic battle that took place in 208AD China, a time when three factions were vying for control of all of China. The battle sequences are intense and well coordinated, the individual fights are very well choreographed, and the acting and dialogue are well done. You will definitely fall deeply into the story and become attached to the characters that fill the screen. The source for this movie is the uber-novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms, which details the fall of the Han dynasty and the struggle of numerous parties to regain total domination of China until the formation of the Chin dynasty. The book itself is so full of intrigue and backstabbing that it makes for a difficult read at times, but this movie stays away from all of that negative stuff and just focuses on a mutually respectable alliance between the factions of Liu Pei and Sun Chuan agaist the evil Tsao Tsao. The movie is also well cast and the constumes and makeup so well done, that the actors and actresses match very well to how the characters are described in the Three Kingdoms. A truly wonderful movie, with the only draw back being that it isn't dubbed, so you have divide your attention between the action taking place on the screen and reading. Unless you are fluent in Mandarin that is.

This is a must-see film. I was fortunate enough to catch this flick with my g/f when it came (in its entirety) to the Detroit Film Theatre. Initially, like many of you out there, we were intimidated by the fact that it's a 5 hour movie. Although she watches many more movies than I do, I can also say that I'm generally not all that interested in most movies: I find them too passive and prefer something a bit more interactive (yes, I am a gamer :P). Needless to say it takes an above average plot, engaging characters and good action to really win me over when it comes to most films. So when I say that I was thoroughly entertained the whole way through and that this Blu-Ray graces my shelves as one out of maybe 10 movies I've ever purchased you can understand the weight of my recommendation. If you like action, if you like drama, if you like an engaging cast of characters then you need to see this movie. It won't be five hours of your life wasted, it will be five hours that you'll think back to years after watching it. It is just that good. So don't be shy and pick it up already =). You'll be glad you did.

Don't watch on retrolio Prime or anywhere else. All you get is the "collapsed version", a combination of both parts 1 and 2 into a single. You have to see both to appreciate the artistry, battle scenes, plot/subplot and magnificent performances of all those involved. This is "ang lees" opus.

I know almost nothing of Chinese history, but I really enjoy learning about places and characters I have never heard of. I really enjoyed this movie.
