I had forgotten how complex the theme of this classic really is. From fallen angels to free will to what makes a human being, well, human. This is not your Boris Karloff stereotypical monster story. It is clear that Shelley was a genius as she probes the depths of the human psyche. This will not give you the recipe for re-animation; in fact, there is little "detail" along those lines. It begins and ends on the bleak arctic ice of the barren human soul.

A Beautifully written book! The descriptive words have long been forgotten by today's writers. Mary Shelly was definately a genius with a pen or typewriter or what ever else they used in the 19th century. The central character came across as a bit effeminate and I couldnt help thinking he may be gay as he kept leaving his betrothed at home for months at a time and his sole focus seemed to be on his male friends. The monster was both one to be sorry for and repulsed by at the same time, he certainly didnt come across as the monster I remember from my young days at the movies.Superb and poignant oh for someone to adapt the same style in todays books

This is like Frankenstien-lite so don't get this copy if you need one for school or academic purposes. However, if you have a child or enjoy light reading, Great Illustrated Classics is wonderful just in general. It's abridged books that don't sacrifice plot points or needlessly trim down the story. I read these when I was about 7 or 8 and at the 20 I keep coming back to this publisher.

Perhaps what I found most remarkable about this time capsule were the off hand remarks about the injustices happening to the indigenous peoples of North America at the hands of colonists and pioneers. That these were contemporary comments and not modern-day liberals makes them even more striking.

I found this story to be very interesting............the need of the Dr to not only save or maintain life but, to actually create it.............to have to study so intensely to achieve this mad yet incredible goal and, then to actually bring it to fruition, only to realize how little was considered concerning the actual life it would live when he was concocting this illegitimate and, highly immoral plan to build a man. As the story progressed and life came about.........the being quickly developed feelings and emotions that were never considered............after running away from Victor Frankenstein, this creature hid in a house right under a family's nose; undetected, his time spent her enabled him to learn to speak, & write by watching and listening to them daily, but more importantly, it taught him about compassion, love, and family.......all of which he had none of and longed for, this was because he was not born like you and me but rather, built like a machine.....and because of his beastly looks; people feared him as soon as laid their eyes upon him. This is what breaks his heart making him feel like he would never have anybody to love; in turn this fact fuels his desire to inflict equal pain on his creator! The story is a tale of twisted turns and ups and downs for both character's keeping the reader filled with excitement, sadness, and death right up to the very end. I highly recommend reading this book as it will most likely become one of your favorites.
