Good stuff, finally. I have read several books lately that were just okay, good but not great, so how happy I was to read this book, Exit West, which held my attention from beginning to end. Engaging and believable main characters; honest concern with the isolationist attitude many seem to be taking; a little fantasy - or was it a giant metaphor; deep concerns about today's seemingly endless global immigration and migration; and far from lastly, the complexity of friendships and romance. How can something be fantastical yet realistic? This is it. A thoroughly good read

The rhythm of the writing moves the story along at a perfect pace and supports the hint of a fairytale, while keeping the main characters very real. The use of repetition to convey the thoughts and experiences of two people was most effective and and made the story both enjoyable and and easy to digest. The content is very timely and powerfully conveys the impact of displacement on refugees and the difficulties they face in starting a new life in a new place.

In carefully measured and rhythmic prose, Mohsin Hamid takes readers through a turbulent uprising within an unnamed city as experienced by Saeed and Nadia, two lovers who meet in a university course. The story is all the more emboldened by Hamid's objective, matter-of-fact narrative style; he documents the events in an almost clinical fashion, allowing the rhythm of the prose itself to create the emotion. Hamid is no stranger to narrative experimentation, having written the brilliant HOW TO GET FILTHY RICH IN RISING ASIA in the second person (!) and still managing to sustain the narrative tension effectively throughout. Similarly, EXIT WEST reflects the author's storytelling prowess largely through his stylistic manner of constructing sentences in measured, calculated clauses that build into powerful crescendos that relate the story events instead of his use of more conventional techniques of character development, setting, and the like. Not to be missed.

With a slight sci-fi twist, this book follows two young people who are thrown together due to their circumstances and struggle to maintain their relationship and individuality through their harrowing journey. By posing a "what if" question, Hamid is able to examine the injustices of immigration from this personal perspective.
