I found this book to be very useful in trying to work the stiffness out of my swing. However, as Harvey Penick points out in his book, not everything that works for Ben Hogan will work for you. In particular, I found his advice on pointing ones left foot at 22 degrees totally messed up my already struggling swing. That aside, most of the insights here are worth studying and trying. It's a great distillation for a master.

I am a terrible golfer all though I have only been playing for only 50 years. Read this book and noticed immediate improvements. Better than the 5000 videos I watched on Utube .

I bought this thing and my game did not improve. Then I read it and started practicing some of the tips and my game improved. Nothing major but improvements are a good thing. It’s a good book and can help you self diagnose some of your issues... or at least let you identify the problem. Modern thought is there is no “right way” and we should use what works for the situation. I tend to agree with this thought but you need some fundamentals, unless your an Uber jock that has great eye/hand coordination and all the other things needed to pull off a good shot. But if your so good, why are you reading this review? Seriously, It can help but go see a pro for lessons to fine tune your game.

This book, while it maybe old, provides the fundamentals of a golf swing: (i) the grip; (ii) stance and posture; (iii) the back-swing; and (iv) the downswing in an easy to understand way. I started reading this book in 2003 when started back into golf after a 7 year break (college and law school) and wish I had known about the book when I first started playing. I took about 5-7 strokes off my game immediately and now (2019) after another 10 year break (wife, kids, work) I picked up the book again and started to notice a similar result. My shots are producing a better strike and follow through. If you do nothing else, the grip section of this book is worth every $ you spend and more as I do not believe you will get a better lesson on your grip which I believe was one of the major reasons my game improved. I highly recommend this book and for the money, it is probably one of if not the most efficient ways to improve your game.

Convenient to carry as I use this as a textbook for my Beginning Golf classes at TCU. The great takeaway is, Hogan used extreme positions, ie super flat swing plane, to max out so that he could strike the ball in the same spot on the clubhead every time. This also explains why he became so great. On TV this year (2019) they bragged that Tiger" marks on his clubface were the size of a dime, Hogan's was the size of a BB. I am old enough I got to watch him practice at Colonial CC, and I assure you no one, absolutely no one, has ever struck a ball with his precision.
