This memoir is deeply moving and inspiring for anyone with a compassionate heart ! It opens your eyes to the reality of life in some orphanages and even finds some answers to why- not all- but some reasons. Still unacceptable- but she helps you wrap your head around the cultural differences.. As much as is possible from a westerners perspective. The reader should remember, our perception of what we see and experience is effected tremendously by our past experiences. This is demonstrated by the way her feelings and perspective change over the course of her time in china. And continue to morph today.Inspiring and leaves me wondering what next? For the kids and the author. As a mom of a daughter from china... I feel a little more informed. Only she really knows the conditions, joys and trials of her life before we met her. But, this mommy's heart is a little more informed of what might be reality. I pray not. I pray not.Open your heart to an orphan- your life will be rocked to new levels!

Living in China and volunteering at an orphanage. Appreciating the difficulties that the directors and staff of Chinese orphanages deal with and still helping them by volunteering and funding and helping children get new homes in America when, if they had stayed in China would have been impossible, especially the handicapped children.

This book is both heart wrenching and heartwarming. Kay Bratt and her team of volunteers truly are special angels to care so deeply and work so hard in a country so different from ours. I was just slightly familiar with some of the conditions in Chinese orphanages thru some friends who have an adopted grandson from there. I really appreciated Kay's explanations of reasons behind why some things are done the way they are. In no way does she make excuses, but she cares enough to know how to actually help, and not just criticize. Kay and others like her are truly an inspiration and a blessing!

I traveled to China with my son and his family …

I traveled to China with my son and his family to finalize the adoption of my adorable little Chinese granddaughter. We had an amazing time and the trip made us reflect a lot about what we saw and experienced. This book verified some of our suspicions, such as the orphanages putting on their best for us, (and that makes sense). We were pretty sure that was the case, but it was nice to hear this from Kay Bratt who had volunteered for years in a Chinese orphanage. Some of her stories were difficult to read, but she made us understand about the culture and the reason why they do some of the things they do. These people have a job to do and we are so thankful they cared for our sweet little two year old that is now living in the US with a loving family.
